Access by Industry Groups

Since 2001, in an agreement with HASYLAB [DESY], EMBL Hamburg offers beamtime on its X13 beamline to industrial groups carrying out proprietary research for a fee. In justified cases, beam time on the X13 beamline can be exchanged by beam time on other EMBL Hamburg beamlines for protein crystallography, non-crystalline systems and EXAFS experiments at a rate corresponding to the relative beamline efficiencies. The industrial users are treated in the same way as the academic users [including organisation of lodging, support and provision of local infrastructure] with an exception that they do not have to provide EMBL with the details of the project other than the names of the industrial users, the expected amount of access, the type of the experiment, safety issues associated with the sample and the sample environment as well as the DESY safety radiation protection regulations.

Should licensed software be required for data acquisition, the industrial groups have to state that they have a valid license at home. Financial support for the access [travel, accommodation, etc] is not provided. Booking and allocation of beam time is carried out via the same beam time schedule interface as for the academic users.

The following net-charges per hour apply [not including VAT] for access to the X13 beamline:

  • EUR 320 / hour for the first 24 hours per calendar year
  • EUR 220 / hour for the remaining beam time per calendar year

The charge will be made for the actual amount of beam time used that will be defined after the end of the experiment. Accounting and business management procedures will be carried out by EMBL Hamburg and EMBL Enterprise Management Technology Transfer GmbH [EMBLEM]. Invoicing will be carried out by EMBLEM at the end of the calendar year.
