Paul Tucker celebrates his retirement

Colleagues and friends past and present, from around Europe and further afield, got together on Friday 4th December to celebrate Paul Tucker’s retirement. Paul’s retirement symposium consisted of nine talks by colleagues and past students who talked about a variety of subjects but principally the structural methods for obtaining information about how human pathogens do their work, and how they might be stopped. The topics had been chosen to match Paul's own research interests. Matthew Groves, staff scientist at EMBL Hamburg, finished the program with a talk on Developmental, rather than Structural Biology. A relaxed lunch and tea break meant that old friends had the time to catch up and make new plans. The event was rounded off with an evening of good food and music.

After 25 years at EMBL, 11 years of which were spent at EMBL Hamburg, Paul will be dearly missed as an important member of staff. Over the years, he has been active in many areas including playing key roles in successful international research projects, and initiating several training courses, legacies which current staff at the Hamburg Unit aim to maintain. Paul will retire to the Netherlands at the end of the year, where he plans to pursue his interest in graphic design, and the graphic representation of science. His colleagues at EMBL wish him all the best and hope that he will stay in touch.
