On the Tuesday 23rd of February, EMBL Hamburg, together with the network cluster BIOKATALYSE2021, hosted a workshop focusing on applications of structural biology in academic research. The BIOKATALYSE2021 cluster is funded by the German Science Foundation and brings together partners from industry and academia primarily situated in North Germany. Fifty seven participants from science and industry attended the evening event aimed at reinforcing existing links between EMBL Hamburg and industry partners, and encouraging new collaborations and projects. The evening began with four talks from EMBL staff (Matthias Wilmanns and Jochen Müller-Dieckmann), Prof. Garabed Antranikian from the BIOKATALYSE2021 management at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, and Dr. Reinhard Baumfalk from Sartorius Stedium Biotech GmbH.. The talks outlined several successful projects already completed within the cluster and opened up the discussion for further collaborations and ideas. Following the talks, the project leader of EMBL@Petra III, Thomas Schneider, gave the participants a tour of the beamlines and associated facilities currently under construction at PETRA III before the evening ended at the DESY bistro for dinner and the chance to chat and discuss together. “This was a unique opportunity to look at the impressive work going on at the DESY campus and we hope that the evening together will result in new collaborations and exciting projects” said Karin Meyer-Pannwitt from the BIOKATALYSE2021 management.
