Hamburg selected to host 2013 Biology and Synchrotron Radiation conference
At this year's International Biology and Synchrotron Radiation (BSR) conference in Melbourne, Australia, it was decided to hold the next conference in Hamburg.
The case for Hamburg was presented by the Head of EMBL Hamburg, Matthias Wilmanns, and colleague SAXS Group Leader Dmitri Svergun. The BSR International Advisory Committee unanimously selected Hamburg to host the 11th conference in 2013. “With our new beamlines at PETRA-III and the associated facilities up and running by 2013, Hamburg is an ideal and exciting place to have this type of conference“ said Matthias Wilmanns, and added “we want to raise the bar by organising an exciting conference that will be highly attractive to many scientists interested into synchrotron-based structural biology applications.” Now back in Hamburg, M. Wilmanns and D. Svergun and their staff from EMBL will start to plan the conference.
The BSR conference series has a unique profile by connecting life sciences and opportunities arising from synchrotron and, more recently, laser sources. Life science applications at synchrotrons account for about 35% of the total of all experiments. The first BSR conference took place in Frascati (Italy) in 1986. Subsequent meetings were held in: Chester, UK (1988), Stanford, USA (1990), Tsukuba, Japan (1992), Grenoble, France (1995), Chicago, USA (1998), Sao Pedro, Brazil (2001), Himeji, Japan (2004), Manchester, UK (2007), Melbourne, Australia (2010).
