The second annual INSTRUCT meeting took place in the centre of Hamburg from the 28th to the 29th of April 2010 and was hosted by EMBL Hamburg. Just over 120 delegates from academia, industry and the EU commission participated in the two day meeting which covered reports from the working groups and research activities as well as from the newly selected associate centres. The introduction of the conference included the Director General of EMBL Iain Mattaj, the Head of Unit for Research Infrastructures within the Directorate General for Research within the European Commission Hervé Pero, and Sir Tom Blundell, professor of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge and founder of the biotech company Astex Therapeutics. Other highlights included a talk by special guest, Nobel Prize winner Ada Yonath and a tour of infrastructures on the DESY Campus in Bahrenfeld. The reports from the affiliated countries showed that the interest and enthusiasm for INSTRUCT is strong, and that the activities in the user communities has been growing. As the preparatory phase enters its final year, INSTRUCT members are looking towards the start of operation at the beginning of 2011.
