EMBL Hamburg hosts 1st EMBO Conference on Catalytic Mechanisms by Biological Systems
From the 5th to the 7th May, ca 120 participants attended the EMBO Conference entitled “Catalytic Mechanims by biological systems: at the interface between chemistry and biology” which took place on the DESY Campus in Hamburg. The conference included eight sessions with a total of 29 speakers who covered a wide range of topics detailing advanced methodological approaches, including high resolution kinetic protein crystallography, neutron crystallography, NMR, mass spectroscopy and enzymology. Some 50 posters were also presented during the 3 day meeting. This conference was the first in a series of three conferences on this topic and was hosted by EMBL Hamburg. The main organizers, Victor Lamzin and Andrea Schmidt, were very happy with the positive feedback. “The conference was a unique opportunity for scientists from academia and industry in both chemistry and biological fields to get together and discuss new projects and ideas. We designed the program to be as diverse as possible to encourage stimulating discussions” says Andrea. “We plan to build on the success of this meeting, “added Victor, “and are looking forward to the next conference in two years time”. The second conference will take place in Oulu, Finland in 2012.
