Praktischer EMBO-Workshop für Biologie- und Chemielehrer (TWP)

English : The workshop will teach the audience with the help of freely available computer software how complicated protein and DNA molecules are made up from simple building blocks and how they fold into their three-dimensional structure. Following that, it will be shown that it is the three-dimensional structure which is responsible for the precise function of these molecules. Simple crystallization experiments will be carried out, the result of which can be examined on the day after. Last but not least, it will be discussed how these results can be utilized by the pharmaceutical industry to develop new drugs for various diseases, e.g. AIDS. Deutsch : In dem Workshop soll mit Hilfe frei verfügbarer Computerprogramme gezeigt werden, wie Protein- und DNA-Moleküle aus einfachen Blöcken zu komplizierten drei-dimensionalen Strukturen aufgebaut sind. Darauf aufbauend wird der direkte Zusammenhang zwischen der Struktur und der Funktion erläutert. In einfachen Experimenten, die später auch im Unterricht durchgeführt werden können, wird demonstriert, wie Proteine zur Strukturaufklärung kristallisiert werden. Des weiteren werden die Anwendungen der Proteinstrukturanalyse in der pharmazeutischen Industrie zur Entwicklung neuer Medikamente, zum Beispiel gegen AIDS, diskutiert. Die Europäische Union finanziert diesen Workshop als Teil des Projektes "Continuing Education for European Biology Teachers" (CEEBT), das von der Europäischen Organisation für Molekularbiologie (EMBO) koordiniert wird.
