Significant advancements in the macromolecular crystallographic methodology, both in terms of
software and hardware, were recently introduced to routine practice of solving macromolecular
crystal structures. Thanks to the availability of strong synchrotron beam lines, efficient data
processing programs and powerful phasing algorithms, it is currently possible to successfully
use very weak signals for phasing novel crystal structures. Examples of the use of weak
anomalous scatterers or radiation damage induced signal for phasing will be presented and
discussed.
