 | The EMBL-Outstation at DESY: From Conception to Early Childhood | |

The quest for a 100-fold increase in brilliance required for time-resolved
x-ray diffraction of contracting muscle made us look into synchrotron
x-radiation. It turned out that DESY and the planned storage ring DORIS
promised to provide up to 1000-times higher brilliance than any other
x-ray source. Building and operating facilities at DESY to make use
of these new x-ray sources for structural biology would obviously be
a project on a national or international level. A proposal to build
an outstation at DESY was presented to and approved by the EMBO
committee charged with planning the scope of the European Molecular
Biology Laboratory project. With support from the German government
and the DESY Directorate, a radiation lab (Bunker 2) at the DESY
synchrotron and preparations for a lab at the DORIS storage ring
were planned and built ahead of the founding of the EMBL. The
first x-ray synchrotron radiation beamline was constructed and
installed in Bunker 2.
