The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).
The EMBL Unit in Hamburg, specialising in structural biology and provision of scientific services, is located at the premises of the German DESY research campus hosting the synchrotron facility PETRA III and the European X-ray Free Electron Laser. EMBL operates 3rd generation beamlines at the PETRA III storage ring, provides extensive download and remote scientific computational services and offers an international and stimulating research environment. The laboratories are excellently equipped for high-throughput protein expression, purification and crystallisation together with a number of biophysical methods for sample characterisation.
The Lamzin Group at the EMBL-Hamburg applies and develops cutting-edge computational methods and experimental approaches with a major focus on macromolecular crystallography and targets of biomedical interest. A highly motivated and experienced researcher is sought to join the group's efforts in an international collaborative structure-based study aimed to discover new drug leads for leukemia treatment. The successful applicant will be involved in in silico identification and in vitro validation of new small chemical compounds with inhibitory activity; computational approaches and the development of the novel scaffold hopping software ViCi and crystallographic structure determination of protein-ligand complexes. The EMBL offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment and participation in internal and external collaborations will be encouraged.
Qualifications and Experience
The candidate should have a PhD degree in a relevant field and sufficient research accomplishments. Experience in scientific programming (knowledge of C, C++, Fortran and/or Shell/Perl/Python scripting is preferred), sample preparation and X-ray crystallography is required. Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work in an international environment are essential. Familiarity with molecular biology techniques for sample quality control would be considered an advantage, but training can be provided.
