EMBL has been conferred with a badge of ‘excellence’ by the European Commission, in recognition of its progress in implementing the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for Recruitment of Researchers.

Being based on a system of limited duration contracts, recruitment and retention of highly qualified staff is one of EMBL’s top priorities. We not only aim to attract and recruit the most talented scientists, but also to provide an intellectual home for researchers, with the highest standards of support and development opportunities.

A European initiative

EMBL welcomes and fully supports the recommendations of the Charter and Code, which are addressed to researchers and employers alike. This initiative aims at better employment and working conditions for researchers throughout Europe, to create an attractive, open and sustainable European labour market for researchers. The Charter and Code set out obligations and standards, ranging from selection and mobility to research freedom and non-discrimination.

By adhering to these principles, EMBL demonstrates its commitment to act in a responsible and respectable way and to provide fair conditions to researchers, with a clear intention to contribute to the advancement of the European Research Area.

Action plan for EMBL

Following a multi-layered consultation, EMBL has prepared a strategy and action plan, incorporating the Charter and Code and ensuring that the provisions for EMBL research staff are in line with the recommendations of the European Commission. The plan considers a broad spectrum of HR activities, including:

  • ethical and professional aspects
  • recruitment
  • working conditions
  • social security
  • training.
